Data Profiling

Dataedo 10 allows you to discover data stored in the database and review its contents and quality. Data Profiling module is a combination of useful metrics with a friendly User Interface. On top of it, Profiling in Dataedo allows you to peek into the most common, or random data from your tables. Learn more about Data Profiling.

Online licenses and Dataedo Account

We are introducing the online license management.

This biggest change in the 10 will present itself at the login screen to the Desktop App. You can now log in to Dataedo using your business email. Also, you can seamlessly switch through all your available licenses.

Home page

Another change is waiting for you literally on the next screen. To improve your user experience, we are introducing a Home Page in the Desktop App, where you can check summary stats of Your Catalog, and quickly access other resources.

Import descriptions

Dataedo 10 allows you to import your tables and columns descriptions by pasting them into our tool.

Other Desktop improvements

  1. Moving modules and manual tables between databases,

  2. Repository Explorer redesigned - added root element and folder items counter,

  3. Grid settings are now saved between sessions and are not refreshed while saving,

  4. Graying out read only columns and tooltips explaining purpose of fields and columns.

Web Catalog

Community redesigned

To simplify Community use we merged Comment, Question, and TODO into a plain Comment but now you can mark that comment requires action, which will unlock its workflow (open or closed).

Other Web Catalog improvements

  1. Automatic Subject Area and Database ER diagrams,

  2. Option to edit object Subject Areas,

  3. Search option in grids.

New Metadata Connectors

Dataedo 9.3 adds support for new sources:

  • Neo4J - the most popular graph database

  • Elasticsearch - the most popular local search engine

and the main big data file formats:

  • Apache Avro

  • Apache Parquet

Desktop - Manual procedures and functions

Multiple users asked for an option to document their procedures, functions, and additional scripts which were often stored outside of the main database. Dataedo 9.3 adds the option of adding procedures and functions to repository manually with designer. Just choose the New > Procedure option from the ribbon:

Web Catalog

Authentication with Okta/SAML

From 9.2 Dataedo Web Catalog can be configured so that users can log in with Okta and possibly with other SAML providers. This simplifies deployment for admins and adoption in the company. It's enough for admins to enable access to Web Catalog in the SAML provider and users are able to log into the portal. 9.2 does not check available licenses. This will functionality be released at a later date.

Primary/Unique keys (PK/UK) and Relationships (FK) editor

We are constantly expanding documentation editing capabilities for data stewards. Dataedo 9.2 adds option to define and edit primary and unique keys (PK/UK) and relationships (foreign keys) between tables and other data objects.

Business Glossary diagram improvements

We are constantly working on data presentation in web portal. In 9.2 we improved the following in business glossary diagrams:

  • Fixed displaying of relationships,

  • Added option to filter by entry type,

  • Added related entries from outside of the glossary.

Other improvements

Here are some other improvements in Web Catalog:

  • New installer - Offline Installer,

  • Added list of imports for each database,

  • Added object description preview in the object page header,

Desktop

Dataedo Desktop remains core component in our platform as a tool for data stewards to build the documentation.

View designer (manual views)

Till 9.2 objects designer only supported tables. Now, you can design manual views too. You can use this functionality to save your favorite SQL queries.

Copy module/ERD

Now, you can copy entire module with ERD and linked objects.

Redesign of Schema Change Tracking report

We redesigned Schema Change Tracking report so that it's easier to browse and it's possible to see all the schema imports - even without any changes.

Option to paste multiple cells

We added ability to paste multiple cells at a time (with multiple values or the same), similarly to MS Excel.

Improved Progress Tracking

We redesigned Progress Tracking feature to better highlight progress that is less than 100% - those cells will be displayed in orange.

Support for Data Lake files

One of the most requested features was am option to document files commonly used in data lakes. In Dataedo 9.1, we've added an option to import schema from XML, JSON, and CSV files, and more will be added in future releases.

You can now import the schema of the file directly, or just paste the contents of the file for Dataedo to add.

Data Community in Dataedo Web Catalog

To make sure your documentation brings the best value, it's important that not only the team preparing it but also users who access it later can have a clear voice in the process. Dataedo 9.1 adds Community features to allow this discussion to occur naturally. Viewer users can now comment on objects and their documentation to point out any required changes in the database or issues with the documentation itself. This and future changes will empower your end-users to become true Data Citizens.

Editing Descriptions in Web Catalog

Sometimes, when browsing through descriptions in the Web Catalog you could encounter information that needs clarification or typos. Before, to correct these issues an editor needed to start Dataedo Desktop and make the changes there. In Dataedo 9.1 you can edit titles, descriptions, and custom field values directly from Dataedo Web.

Desktop UI improvements

  • First run of Dataedo now displays a series of tooltips to better guide new users.

  • You can now enable autosaving of changes.

  • Editor highlights selected row.

  • Key columns are now locked to the left by default, allowing for easier browsing on smaller screens or larger custom field counts.

  • Adding table to ERD now can add that table to the module automatically

  • You can now edit the name and schema of an existing table, so that when you rename object in the database, you can also rename it in Dataedo so that future metadata updates will seamlessly match the same object.

  • Table title is now displayed always next to the table's name.

  • Updated branding.

  • Upgraded UI library.

Connector updates

  • Snowflake: connection now supports different role than their default.

  • Snowflake: updated the driver.

Bug fixes

  • Newly created data links are now visible from creation rather than after refresh.

  • Improved behavior of dropdown custom fields with open value lists in the Relations tab.

  • Fixed an issue with the table designer window incorrectly saving column size as a part of the type field.

  • Fixed an issue with removing users through Administration Console.

  • Fixed a crash caused by canceling the creation of a new Module.

This release is the release of a new product within the Dataedo family - Dataedo Web Catalog, a web interface for metadata repository. You can use Dataedo Web Catalog and Dataedo Desktop concurrently - Desktop allows you to import and document your databases, while Web Catalog is the superior option when looking at the prepared documentation.
