Documenting and cataloging Analysis Services Tabular

Catalog and documentation

Dataedo imports Tables and Data sources, retrieves relationships between tables, and automatically builds a column-level lineage.

Tables

Dataedo imports tables and columns. Metadata such as data type, identity, and nullable attributes are also imported for these objects.

Relations

Dataedo imports and represents relationships between tables based on keys.

Data Lineage

The foundation for building lineage in the Tabular connector is the Linked Source. When importing a Tabular server, Dataedo retrieves Data Sources, which in Dataedo are named Linked Source. Dataedo connects existing documentation with Data Sources. If a matching connection is found, lineage will be built based on it. You can read more about linked sources in this article.

Column level lineage is built between a source table and a table in Analysis Services Tables and is created at the import stage.

Script

The script that creates the table is available in the Desktop version of Dataedo.

Data Sources

Dataedo imports information about connections defined in the model.

Imports both available connection types in Tabular:

• Provider Data Source (Legacy type)
• Structured Data Source

Linked source is assigned to a table that is based on a given connection. Linked source assigned to a Table is visible in the Metadata & Settings tab of the Table, in the Desktop version of Dataedo.

• SQL Analysis Services (SSAS): 2016, 2017, 2019
• Azure Analysis Services
• Power BI Premium

Data profiling

Dataedo does not support data profiling in SSAS Tabular.

Limitations

Following model elements currently are not supported:

• Hierarchies
• Partitions
• Roles
