Building a Glossary

To add a glossary, click the Add option in the ribbon or right-click the repository explorer and choose Business Glossary. A new glossary with a default name will be created. Provide a meaningful name and confirm with the enter key.

Create new term in the glossary

To create a new term in the glossary, right-click the glossary item, Terms folder, or existing term, choose the New option, and then the type of term you want to create (the default type is "Term"). A new blank term will be created.

Provide the form title, definition, and attributes using the term form visible in the right pane and save with the Save term button from the ribbon or ctrl + S from the keyboard.

Define term hierarchy

Terms in a glossary can be organized into a hierarchy. To create a hierarchy, simply drag & drop the term into the term you want it to be under and confirm.

Defining relationships

Add relationship using drag & drop

You can conveniently add a new relationship by dragging one term to the other term's Related terms tab. Then select the term on the list, specify the relationship type, provide optional comments, and save. The relationship is added to the catalog.

You can also add multiple relationships using the Edit term relationships button from the Related terms tab grid toolbar or the ribbon. Use the search bar from the relationships editor that will open to find terms that you want to add relationships to. To add a relationship, select the checkbox next to a term, provide the relationship type, optional comments, repeat for other terms if needed, and save with the Save button.

Delete relationship

To delete a relationship, select it in the Related terms tab and choose Remove from repository from the context menu or the Remove button from the grid toolbar. Confirm with the OK button to delete the relationship.

Linking to Assets

Linking Terms to Data Catalogs, Data Glossaries and Business Glossaries is not possible in Desktop.

You can see all linked data assets (tables and columns) in the term Linked data elements tab.

To go to a table, right-click the row and choose the go to option.

To go to a term, right-click the row and choose the go to term option.

You can see column linked terms directly in the Columns tab in the Linked terms column (visible only if there are any links).

There are a number of ways to define glossary-data dictionary links, from either end.

Drag table to term

To link a specific table with a specific term, you can drag & drop the table to the term and confirm with OK. Please note that you can drag the table from the repository explorer tree or the list of tables from the Tables folder.

You can also drag the table to the term's Linked data elements tab.

You can quickly create a link between a term and a table by dragging the term from the repository explorer to the table Linked terms tab.

You can link a specific column by dragging it from the table Columns tab to a specific term on the repository explorer tree.

Use search terms option

You can link terms with tables and columns using the search terms option. You can enter it from various places in the table form using Edit links to Business Glossary terms:

  • from the ribbon in the Linked terms tab
  • from the Linked terms toolbar
  • under right-click on the column

When you open the form, make sure you choose the right table element you want to link - table or specific column - from the Link data element dropdown. Find with the search bar and choose by selecting the checkbox the right term(s) and confirm the link with the Save button.

Use search data elements option

Similarly, you can link data assets from the term form. Open the data dictionary search with the Edit links to Data Dictionary elements from the ribbon or from the Linked data elements tab toolbar. Use the search bar to find the right assets - tables or columns, select them with the checkbox and confirm with the Save button.

Create linked term from the data dictionary

You can create new terms directly from assets in the data dictionary - tables and columns. Such a link will be automatically linked with the asset it was created from.

You can create a new term from the table name. To create a term, right-click the table name in the repository explorer, choose New and Linked Business Glossary term. If you have more than one glossary in the repository, you also need to choose the glossary the term will be created in.

Confirm to create a new term. You can change its name and provide a definition.

Create glossary term from column

Similarly to creating a term from a table, you can create a new term from the column name. To create a new term from a column, right-click the column in the table Columns tab and choose the Add new linked Business Glossary term option. If you have more than one glossary in the repository, you also need to choose the glossary the term will be created in. Then follow the steps as in the case of the table.
